Determination of Iodine Count

Determination of Iodine Count

The iodine number refers to the number of iodine required to saturate the fatty acids in 100 mg of oil or fat. Oils rich in saturated fatty acids have a low iodine number. In contrast, oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids have high iodine numbers.

Determination of Iodine Count

In other words, the iodine number is a measure of the degree of unsaturation of a liquid oil, fat, or wax. It is the amount of iodine in grams taken up by 100 grams of liquid oil, fat, or wax. Saturated fats, fats, and waxes do not take up iodine, therefore their iodine values are zero. However, unsaturated fats, fats, and waxes do take up iodine. Unsaturated compounds contain molecules with double or triple bonds that are highly reactive to iodine. The more iodine added, the higher the iodine value. They also become more reactive, less stable, softer, and more susceptible to oxidation and rancidity. When tests are performed, a known excess of iodine, usually in the form of iodine monochloride, is allowed to react with a known weight of liquid oil, fat, or wax, and then the amount of unreacted iodine remaining is determined by titration.

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Among the numerous tests performed in this context, there are also iodine number determination services.
