Determination of Wax Amount

Determination of Wax Amount

One of the important purity parameters in olive oil is the amount of wax (wax).

Determination of Wax Amount

Extra virgin, the principal oil obtained from olive fruits, is the most valuable and therefore most prone to fraud. A number of methods have been officially developed and approved around the world to highlight fake oils. In this way, the possibility of mixing seed oils is greatly reduced by evaluating the fatty acid composition and then the sterol composition.

One of the methods developed for the determination of waxes in olive oils is to reduce silica and use a less hazardous solvent. Evaluation of the content of candles is requested by official organizations. The official method uses silicic acid and separates several fractions using large amounts of hazardous solvent (n-hexane).

Another method for determining waxes is by gas chromatography of waxes, fatty acid methyl esters, and fatty acid ethyl esters. This method is recommended as a tool for distinguishing between olive oil and pomace oil, as a quality parameter for extra virgin olive oil, and as a quality parameter for detecting adulterated blends of extra virgin olive oil and low-quality oils.

In the test, analysis, measurement and evaluation studies carried out in our organization, national and international standards and applicable legal regulations are complied with and reliable and impartial results are obtained. These studies are based on the latest technological equipment, trained and experienced staff and modern methods. Among the numerous tests carried out in this context, there are also wax quantity determination services.
