EN 13750 Domestic Water Heaters for Use on Stove, Oven or Hob Tops - Requirements and Test Methods

EN 13750 Domestic Water Heaters for Use on Stove, Oven or Hob Tops - Requirements and Test Methods

The European standard “EN 13750 Domestic water heaters for use on a hob, cooker or hob top - Requirements and test methods” specifies the safety and performance requirements for domestic water heaters for use on a hob, cooker or hob top and applies to all heaters, regardless of material or method of manufacture. However, this standard does not apply to electric heaters.

EN 13750 Domestic Water Heaters for Use on Stove, Oven or Hob Tops - Requirements and Test Methods

For the purposes of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply:

  • A kettle is a hollow vessel with or without a pressure cooker, lid or spout, used to boil water on a stove, cooking vessel or hob.
  • A whistle is an audible indicator device that is activated by steam when water is boiling.
  • The fastening system is a method of attaching a handle to the body of the kettle or attaching a button to a lid or whistle.
  • Capacity is the largest amount of water the kettle can boil without spilling water.
  • The handle is an extension attached to the body of the kettle and designed to make it easier to carry and hold the item during normal use.
  • The knob is a short extension integrated or attached to the lid or whistle of the kettle and is designed to facilitate positioning or removal of the lid or whistle in normal use.
  • Base diameter refers to the dimension measured at the outer base of the kettle, along the maximum circumference of contact when placed on a flat surface, or along the maximum circle that fits the base area.

Kettles must be made of materials of a type and purity that do not pose a toxic hazard under normal conditions of use and do not in any way affect the organoleptic qualities of the food prepared in them.

The general structure of water heaters is defined in this standard as follows:

  • General: The boiler must be stable when empty and filled to capacity and placed on a plane inclined at 5 degrees so that the center of gravity is in the most unfavorable position. All components must be smooth and free from burrs, splinters or sharp edges. The body must be watertight up to and including boiling.
  • Handle: It should be capable of being grasped for its normal purpose without the hand or fingers coming into contact with any surface exceeding the values given in this standard for the relevant materials. The handle or grip of the boiler and the lid knob should be of a hard material up to 150 degrees. The shape of the handle or grip should provide a secure grip to prevent slipping backwards and forwards in the hand and should be designed to enable the user's hand to hold the boiler without coming into contact with any metal part of the boiler body or the handle brackets.
  • Button: Buttons for normal holding purposes shall be capable of being operated without the hand or fingers coming into contact with any surface exceeding the values given for the relevant materials in this standard.
  • Lid: When the kettle is tilted 90 degrees from horizontal in the pouring direction, with the lid correctly fitted, the lid should remain in place and out of the user's reach.
  • Whistle: The whistle should remain in place while the water is boiling and the whistle is blown.
  • Faucet: If not integral, the faucet must be sealed to the body. The faucet itself must be leak-proof.
  • Base: If the base is not integral, it must be sealed to the body.
  • Ventilation: The boiler must be vented, for example from the spout, so that escaping steam does not reach the user's hand when lifting or emptying the boiler.
  • Pouring: When tested in accordance with the appendix to this standard (Annex A), the liquid should flow clear from the spout. Individual drops may flow back to the sidewall, but there should be no continuous drip.
  • Diameters: Any claimed diameter must be within plus/minus 5 mm of the measured diameter.
  • Base shape: The base must not be convex when viewed from below or become convex when tested in accordance with standard EN 12983-1.
  • Capacity: Actual capacity should not be less than claimed capacity.

This standard does not give specific requirements for materials or combinations of materials for the manufacture of kettle furniture, but any materials used must comply with the requirements of the appropriate tests. It is not intended that all of the following tests be performed sequentially. Unless otherwise stated, each test is valid on its own:

  • Fatigue resistance: When tested in accordance with the kettle annex to this standard (Annex B), a handle assembly shall withstand 15 cycles without visible deterioration or loosening of the handle or fastening system.
  • Thermal hazards: When the water heater is tested in accordance with the annex to this standard (Annex C), the specified temperatures shall not be exceeded.

Water heaters that do not comply with the requirements of this test must carry a warning that suitable protection must be used. When tested in accordance with Annex C of this standard, it shall not be possible to touch any metal part of the insulated part of the furniture that has a temperature exceeding 55 degrees with a spherical probe of 14 mm diameter.
