OECD procedure 203 is an acute toxicity testing method that evaluates the toxicity of a test substance on different fish species. In standard tests carried out under this procedure, fish are exposed to a test substance for a period of 96 hours. Deaths are recorded at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours, and concentrations that kill half the fish are determined whenever possible. At least five test concentrations are analyzed during testing. A range finder test is performed to assist in determining appropriate test concentrations.

The most commonly requested test organism for these tests is Zebrafish. However, the test method can be performed against various approved fish species.
OECD Procedure 203 is recommended as a preliminary analysis for toxicology studies. After acute testing, many customers are required to have chronic toxicity testing and bioaccumulation studies carried out. For a complete ecological impact and environmental consequences analysis, customers request biodegradability determination, acute and chronic toxicology testing, and bioaccumulation analysis. Together, these three categories provide a comprehensive framework of how a test sample or product may affect the environment during use and after disposal, and how this impact may persist. Toxicology testing is often required for environmentally acceptable product labeling claims.
Under OECD Procedure 203, the fish acute toxicity test is applied to readily and poorly soluble and volatile substances. The purpose of this test is to determine the acute toxicity effects of chemicals on fish. In principle, during this test, fish are exposed to the test substance at a concentration of 100 mg/l in the limit test or over a period of 50 hours in five concentration ranges in the full study (LC96 test).
These tests have two types of restrictions:
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides fish and acute toxicity testing services within the scope of OECD Procedure 203 with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
