DIN 137 Spring Washers, Curved or Waved

DIN 137 Spring Washers, Curved or Waved

In the DIN 137 standard published by the German Standardization Institute (DIN), the requirements for two groups of special spring lock washers as Type A and Type B spring lock washers are explained. Unlike standard split helical spring lock washers, lock washers within the scope of DIN 137 must tighten the screw and or nut clockwise or counterclockwise. When tightened by tightening the nut, lock washers conforming to this standard exert a spring force between the tightened bolt and the substrate, creating frictional resistance against rotation.

DIN 137 stainless steels for spring lock washers are divided into three groups: austenitic, ferritic, and martensitic. Austenitic steel is by far the most common type ( over 90% of commercial fasteners). Steel groups and strength classes are indicated by four-digit letters and numbers, as shown in the table within the standard. The DIN EN ISO 3506 standard covers the requirements for screws and nuts made of stainless steel.

The requirements for spring lock washers are included in the DIN 137 standard under the following headings:

  • Mechanical properties of stainless steel for spring lock washers
  • Chemical composition of stainless steel for spring lock washers
  • Mechanical properties of steel for spring lock washers
  • Chemical composition of steel for spring lock washers

A spring washer is a metal ring that detaches at one point and twists into a spiral shape. This helps the washer apply a spring force between the head of the fastener and the surface. This creates greater friction and rotational resistance by holding the washer against the substrate and the bolt thread against the nut or substrate thread. Spring lock washers provide much better resistance compared to a plain washer. The lock washer prevents nuts and bolts from turning, slipping, and loosening due to vibration and torque. The washer has sharp edges that engage with the mounting surface as well as the nut to prevent counterclockwise rotation.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for spring washers (curved or wavy) within the scope of DIN 137 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
