Ingress Protection (IP) Tests

Ingress Protection (IP) Tests

EUROLABhas a large laboratory to test various leaks and water intrusions. This includes condensation by dripping, spraying, splashing and hosing for immersion in water tanks. We also offer full dust penetration into dust circulation chambers and entry tests with different foreign objects and different standard access probes.

Ingress Protection (IP) Tests

We can perform fully automatic and accredited tests for all IP classifications according to IEC 60529 and NEMA 250.

Tests Offered

  • Relevant test in the IEC 60068 series
  • Relevant test in the IEC 60721 series
  • Related tests in ETSI 300 019 environmental standards and classification of parameters for equipment functionality in different environments.
  • Note: Some countries, such as Russia, require hygienic testing before export is allowed. EUROLABhas long experience helping manufacturers document such requirements for exporting their products.

Test Standards

  • IEC 60529
  • NEMA 250
  • IEC 60068 2 18
  • IEC 60068 2 68
  • IEC 60721-3-x

What are IP codes?

EN 60529 outlines an international classification system for the sealing effectiveness of electrical equipment enclosures against the ingress of equipment from foreign bodies (eg hands, fingers, tools, dust) and water. This classification system uses the letters "IP" ("Ingress Protection") followed by two or three numbers.

  • Sometimes a third character is used to further indicate the classification
  • If there is only one protection class, "x" is used to change one of the digits; i.e. IPX4, which only addresses water resistance

First IP Number

The first digit of the IP code indicates the degree to which people are protected from contact with moving parts (excluding smooth rotating shafts, etc.) and the degree to which equipment is protected against solid foreign objects entering a case.

  • No special protection
  • Protection from a large part of the body such as hands (but no protection against deliberate access); from solid objects greater than 50 mm in diameter.
  • Protection against fingers or any other object not longer than 80mm or larger than 12mm.
  • Protection from penetration by tools with a diameter or thickness of 2,5 mm or solid foreign objects.
  • Entry protection with 1,0 mm diameter or thickness wires or solid foreign objects
  • Protection from dust that will prevent the equipment from working.
  • Dustproof.

Second IP Number

The second digit indicates the degree of protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful ingress of water (eg drip, spray, immersion, etc.).

  • No special protection
  • Protection from vertically dripping water.
  • Protection from vertically 15º dripping water.
  • Protection from vertically sprayed water 120º.
  • Protection from spray water 360º.
  • Protection from sprayed water from the nozzle hose
  • Protection against heavy seas or powerful jets of water.
  • Protection against diving.
  • Protection against full, continuous immersion in water. *
    * Submergence depth and duration must be specified by the end user. The requirement should be deeper than IP67

Additional characters

The standard only defines additional letters that can be added to classify the level of protection against access by persons to dangerous parts:

A - Back of the hand.

B - Finger.

C - Vehicle.

D - Tel.

Other letters can be added to provide additional information regarding device protection:

H - High voltage device.

M - The device that moves during the water test.

S - The device stands still during the water test.

W - Weather conditions.

IP Code Symbols

This IP Code Symbols table shows the use of the IP classification system. In the "1st digit" column, the numbers 5 and 6 are not unclear grid-like symbols. The "2nd digit" is symbolized in column numbers 3-8 with tear-shaped symbols, sometimes enclosed in a box or triangle, sometimes not closed. (# 7-8). These symbols can be placed on equipment to indicate the IP protection provided.

EUROLAB, with its highly expert team and internationally accredited laboratories, Ingress Protection (IP) Tests It performs all test, analysis, measurement, evaluation and report generation services completely and reliably.
