Heavy-duty hardened washers, defined in the DIN 6340 standard published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), are circular flat washers with an outer diameter and a central hole that are thicker and larger than the most commonly used metric flat washer (defined in the DIN 125 standard). As a result, these washers have a larger surface area and are used where larger bearing surfaces are required.
Heavy-duty hardened washers are manufactured from heat treated hardened steel tempered in diameters ranging from M6 to M30 and hardness level HV 30.
The requirements for heavy-duty hardened washers are included in the DIN 6340 standard under the following headings:
Hardened washers are made physically stronger by hardening or carburizing, but are usually smaller than standard washer. Hardened flat washers are designed with extra strength and are used with grade 8 bolts and other heat treated fasteners. These flakes are heat treated by quenching and tempering to achieve a full hardness of Rc 38/45. There is a large bearing area under the bolt head and a smooth hard surface for the nut to tighten on. The larger the bearing surface of the hardened washers, the helps ensure that the clamp load is spread over the largest bearing area, resulting in an assembly that resists loosening and prevents failures from occurring.
Hardened flat washers are used under bolt heads or nuts to increase the bearing area and provide rigidity so that the nut or bolt can be rotated without damaging the bearing surface. These washers are used to seal a connection, prevent leakage, and especially to distribute pressure under a nut or bolt head.
