Diamonds are valued according to how close they come to colorlessness, in fact the less color they have, the higher their value. But colored diamonds are the exception. Most diamonds range in color from almost colorless with slight hints of yellow or brown.

Founded in 1931, the GIA is the world's leading authority on diamonds, gemstones, and colored stones. This non-profit, public-interest organization is the leading source of information, standards, and education in jewelry. GIA is an abbreviation for the Gemological Institute of America. Gemology is the science of precious stones.
The color grading scale for diamonds, developed by GIA, is considered the industry standard. This scale begins with the letter D, representing colorless, and continues up to Z, with increasing variations. Each letter class has a clearly defined range of color appearance. Diamonds are color-graded by comparing them to stones of known colors under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions. Many of these color differences are too subtle to be seen with the naked eye. However, these small differences can make a huge difference in diamond quality and price.
The color of a diamond affects both its appearance and value. The color grading of diamonds is based on a continuous scale of color intensities ranging from colorless to light colored. These color grades starting from D to Z are known as the normal range of diamond color. Colors beyond Z are called fantasy colors. These are graded in a completely different way.
In the normal range, the most important part of the rating scale is the colorless (D, E, F) and near colorless (G, H, I, J) range. Colorless diamonds lack body color and appear icy white as a result. It does not give the impression of color to most observers. They appear white, especially when viewed from the front.
