EN 251 Shower Trays - Connection Dimensions

EN 251 Shower Trays - Connection Dimensions

The European standard “EN 251 Shower trays - Connection dimensions” specifies the requirements for connection dimensions for shower trays, regardless of the materials used in their manufacture. This standard applies to shower trays used for domestic purposes and complements existing standards for shower trays made from different materials and the current standard for waste fittings (EN 274-1) in terms of dimension requirements. Only the dimensions are mandatory. The shape of the device shown in the figures is for illustrative purposes only and does not in any way affect the shape of the device, which is left to the manufacturer's discretion.

EN 251 Shower Trays - Connection Dimensions

Basic dimensions must conform to those specified in the table provided within the standard to ensure compatibility with waste fittings conforming to the EN 274-1 standard. The dimensions in the table are based on the following criteria:

  • The vertical distance between the axis of the overflow hole (if any) and the plane of the waste outlet hole.
  • Horizontal distance between the axis of the waste outlet hole and the axis of the overflow hole, if any.
  • The distance between the ground and the centerline of the waste outlet, measured in the plane of the waste outlet.
  • The distance between the axis of the overflow hole and the overflow itself, if any.

The dimensions of the waste outlet opening must be as given in the other table to ensure compliance with the EN 274-1 standard. The dimensions in the table are based on the following:

  • Diameter of the waste outlet hole
  • The distance between the contact diameter of the inspection gauge and the base of the shower tray around the waste outlet hole.
  • Contact diameter of the control gauge
  • Contact cone angle
  • The height between the contact diameter of the inspection gauge and the plane of the waste outlet hole.
  • Sealing surface for waste connector

The clearance around the waste outlet must conform to the dimensions given in the other table. The dimensions in the table are based on the following:

  • The radius of the circular area that will remain empty for the installation of the waste connector.
  • Thickness of reinforcement material around the waste outlet hole

In the world of bathroom fixtures and sanitary ware, standardization plays a crucial role in ensuring compatibility, safety, and ease of installation across different manufacturers and markets. One such fundamental standard is EN 251, which focuses specifically on shower trays. This standard sets uniform requirements for shower tray connection points, regardless of the materials used in their construction. It helps simplify sanitary installations and promotes interoperability within the sanitary engineering sector.

The EN 251 standard has undergone several revisions to keep pace with evolving industry needs and technological advancements. The latest version reflects modern manufacturing practices and user expectations regarding durability and performance. This standard is essential for professionals in the fields of construction, plumbing, and interior design.

The primary purpose of the EN 251 standard is to define precise dimensions for shower tray connections to drainage and water supply systems. This includes specifications for waste outlets, siphon locations, and general interface points that ensure a secure and leak-proof fit. By standardizing these elements, this standard eliminates guesswork in installations and reduces the risk of incompatibility between trays and plumbing components.

The scope of the EN 251 standard is deliberately narrow but practical: it applies to shower trays made from any material such as acrylic, steel, mineral cast, or composite, but it does not cover the structural integrity, load-bearing capacity, or aesthetic characteristics of the trays. In these aspects, complementary standards such as the EN 14527 standard for shower trays in general or the EN 198 standard for performance testing come into play. More importantly, the EN 251 standard is material-independent, making it versatile for a wide range of products, from budget-friendly options to high-end designer products. The focus on connectivity addresses the frustration and costly renovations caused by mismatched fixtures, a common problem in bathroom renovations and new constructions. In today's world, where modular and prefabricated systems are gaining momentum, the EN 251 standard supports sustainable building practices by minimizing waste and increasing recyclability through standardized components.

The EN 251 standard essentially defines a set of mandatory dimensional tolerances to guarantee seamless integration with standard sanitary fittings. The key elements are:

  • Waste outlet location: This standard specifies the exact location and diameter of the central waste orifice, typically 90 mm in diameter, positioned to ensure efficient drainage without water accumulation. Tolerances are usually plus/minus 1 mm to avoid alignment issues in P or S type waste drains.
  • Connection interfaces: The dimensions of the entry points and overflow arrangements are described in detail, ensuring compatibility with common pipe sizes (e.g., 40 mm or 50 mm waste pipes). This standard also addresses the height and angle of the connections to accommodate level ground.
  • Modular sizing: While this standard doesn't specify general tray dimensions, it ensures that connectivity features can be scaled appropriately for popular sizes, from compact 700 mm x 700 mm units to larger 1800 mm x 900 mm models.

Compliance with the EN 251 standard is verified by type tests in which prototypes undergo dimensional checks using precision measuring instruments and assembly samples. Manufacturers must declare conformity with the CE mark, confirming that their products meet the essential health, safety and environmental requirements under the EU Construction Products Regulation (CPR).

In today's construction industry, the EN 251 standard means more than just a technical specification; it facilitates innovation and efficiency. For builders and contractors, compliance minimizes assembly time and errors.

From an environmental perspective, the standard supports the EU's green deal by promoting durable and repairable fixtures that reduce the need for spare parts.
