IEC 60118-13 Electroacoustics - Hearing Aids - Part 13: Requirements and Measurement Methods for Electromagnetic Immunity Against Mobile Digital Wireless Devices

The IEC 60118-13 standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) covers related electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) events for hearing aids. Hearing aid immunity to high frequency fields originating from digital wireless devices such as mobile phones is one of the important electromagnetic compatibility problems affecting hearing aids.

IEC 60118-13 Electroacoustics - Hearing Aids - Part 13: Requirements and Measurement Methods for Electromagnetic Immunity Against Mobile Digital Wireless Devices

This standard describes measurement methods and requirements for hearing aid immunity to digital wireless devices. Most hearing aids contain digital signal processors, and some contain wireless transceivers. In recent years, it has identified digital wireless devices such as cordless phones and cell phones as potential sources of discomfort for hearing aids. Interference in hearing aids depends on the power emitted from the digital wireless device as well as the immunity of the hearing aid. The performance criteria in this standard do not completely guarantee that hearing aid users can use wireless phones without interference and noise, but they create usable conditions in most cases.

When using a wireless phone, the hearing aid should cause minimal or no interference. Therefore, various test methods have been designed to determine the immunity of hearing aids. When a digital wireless device is used near a hearing aid, the hearing aid has radio frequency near-field illumination. However, according to the validation studies conducted during the preparation of this standard, there is a correlation between the measured far field immunity level and the immunity level encountered by a hearing aid used in conjunction with a digital wireless device. The use of the far field test has demonstrated high reproducibility and is considered sufficient to confirm the immunity of hearing aids.

The latest update to the IEC 60118-13 standard includes the following technical changes:

  • A new measurement method and a set of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements have been added for the immunity of hearing aids to mobile digital wireless devices.
  • The general electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements for hearing aids have been removed from the scope of the standard. These are covered by other standards as appropriate.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services to determine the electromagnetic immunity of mobile digital wireless devices in accordance with the IEC 60118-13 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
