EN 14351 Windows and Doors - Product Standard, Performance Specifications

EN 14351 Windows and Doors - Product Standard, Performance Specifications

The European standard “EN 14351 Windows and doors - Product standard, performance characteristics” consists of the following sub-sections published under the same title:

EN 14351 Windows and Doors - Product Standard, Performance Specifications

  • The standard “EN 14351-1 Part 1: Windows and external pedestrian doors” describes material-independent performance characteristics applicable to windows (including roof windows, externally fire-resistant roof windows, and door-height windows), external pedestrian door sets (and their fittings, including frameless glass door sets, emergency exit door sets), and partitions, excluding fire resistance and smoke control properties. Fire resistance or smoke control properties for pedestrian door sets and openable windows are covered by the EN 16034 standard.

This standard applies to:

  • Fixed windows or skylights to be mounted in vertical wall openings, manually or electrically operated windows and door-height windows and partitions, and roof windows to be mounted on roofs, including:
  • Relevant equipment, if any
  • If present, airtight strip
  • When the intention is to have glazed openings, then glazed openings
  • With or without integrated shutters, shutter boxes, or blinds.
  • Manually or electrically operated windows, skylights, door-height windows, and partitions,
  • Those that are wholly or partially glazed, including those with opaque fillers.
  • One or more sashes/windows are fixed, partially fixed, or openable (e.g., hinged, protruding, rotating, sliding).
  • These include manually operated exterior pedestrian gate sets with recessed or panelled wings,
  • Integrated top windows, if any.
  • Adjacent parts, if any, contained within a single frame to be included in a single opening.

Windows covered by this standard are not evaluated in terms of their opening (release) capability.

This standard does not apply to:

  • Roof windows according to EN 1873 and EN 14963 standards.
  • Curtain walls according to EN 13830 standard.
  • Industrial, commercial, and garage doors and walkways according to EN 13241 standard.
  • Interior pedestrian doors conforming to EN 14351-2 standard.
  • Revolving doors.
  • Electric pedestrian gates conforming to EN 16361 standard.
  • Windows intended to be part of an interior partition wall.
  • The standard “EN 14351-2 Part 2: Interior pedestrian door systems” describes material-independent performance characteristics applicable to interior pedestrian doors, excluding fire resistance and smoke control properties. Fire resistance or smoke control properties for pedestrian doors and openable windows are covered by the EN 16034 standard.

This standard applies to door sets designed for use in interior construction work for the following purposes:

  • On the escape routes.
  • For specific uses with special requirements.
  • For communication purposes only.

The above intended uses can be combined, for example, escape routes with special requirements. For interior pedestrian doors with fire resistance or smoke control features, this standard should only be applied in conjunction with the EN 16034 standard. Products covered by this standard are hinged interior pedestrian doors, electrically or manually operated, and single or double leaf partitions with flush or panelled leaves, which can be complemented with:

  • Related building equipment.
  • Door closing devices.
  • Integrated ventilation windows.
  • Adjacent pieces contained within a single frame for inclusion in a single opening.

Manually operated doors with door closing mechanisms are not considered electric doors. Products covered by this standard are not evaluated for structural applications. This standard does not apply to:

  • Industrial, commercial, and garage doors and walkways according to EN 13241 standard.
  • Exterior pedestrian gate sets according to EN 14351-1 standard.
  • Door leaves are sold as a single unit.
  • Door frames are marketed as single units.
  • Electric pedestrian gate systems other than swing type, according to EN 16361 standard.

Door assemblies can be marketed as separate components when each of these components (leaf and frame) is clearly defined. This standard does not address any specific requirements regarding noise emitted from internally electrically hinged door assemblies, as noise emission is not considered a significant hazard.

  • The standard “EN 14351-3 Part 3: Fire and/or smoke resistant window and door systems” describes material-independent performance characteristics related to fire and smoke protection for windows (including roof windows and French windows), pedestrian doors (including frameless glass doors), and partitions. All other characteristics fall under the scope of EN 14351-1 or EN 14351-2 standards.

Not all of these characteristics apply to every product or every intended end-use situation. Where fire and smoke characteristics are required, this standard defines the methods of determination and expression of results and the assessment of conformity.

This standard applies to:

  • Windows to be installed in vertical wall openings, French windows and screens, and skylights to be installed in pitched roofs.
  • Single or double leaf pedestrian doors to be installed in vertical wall openings.

All products must be complete with all relevant hardware. Products intended to have glazed openings must be supplied with glass. Products may be wholly or partially glazed, including opaque filling, and may be with or without integrated shutters or blinds. They may be operated manually or electrically. Windows (including roof windows and French windows) may be fixed or partially fixed, or openable with one or more windows/sash (e.g., hinged, projection, turntable, sliding). Pedestrian door assemblies may include products designed to fit an opening, with or without top or side panels or adjoining parts. They may have flat or panelled sashes.

Products covered by this standard are not evaluated for structural applications.

In general, EN 14351 standards apply to exterior windows (including roof windows and door-height windows) and exterior pedestrian doors (e.g., entrance doors, frameless glass doors, emergency exit doors), regardless of material (PVC-U, wood, aluminum, steel). It does not cover fire resistance and smoke control properties (these properties are covered by the EN 16034 standard).

EN 14351 standards are considered important for the following reasons:

  • Mandatory CE marking for access to the European Union market: As a harmonized standard under EU construction products regulation 305/2011, compliance allows manufacturers to use the CE mark. This is legally required for these products to be placed on the EU market and demonstrates that they meet the essential requirements for safety, health and environmental protection.
  • Ensures consistent performance and safety: Defines material-independent performance characteristics, including:
  • Waterproof
  • Wind load resistance
  • Thermal conductivity (U-value)
  • Air permeability
  • Acoustic performance
  • Release of hazardous substances
  • Load carrying capacity
  • Impact resistance

These are tested, calculated, or evaluated to ensure that products are safe, durable, and perform reliably in real-world use.

  • It facilitates fair competition and comparability: Based on a performance principle, it allows for objective comparisons between products from different manufacturers or materials, supporting impartial bidding and informed consumer choices.
  • It supports energy efficiency and sustainability: By making it mandatory to declare features such as thermal insulation and solar factors, it contributes to building energy savings and compliance with the broader EU energy consumption reduction and environmental impact targets.
  • Legal and regulatory compliance: Non-compliance may hinder market access.
