EN 50436-1 Alcohol Interlocks - Test Methods and Performance Requirements - Part 1: Drink Driving - Devices for Criminal Programs

The EN 50436-1 standard is intended for test laboratories and companies producing alcohol locks. According to this standard, several parameters are specified for type testing purposes: alcohol concentration or breath volume. However, when alcohol locks are in use, the prescribed parameter values may need to be set differently depending on national regulations or user requests. This standard also applies to alcohol locks integrated into the vehicle's other control systems.

However, this standard does not apply to the following equipment: alcohol locks for general preventive use (they fall within the scope of standard EN 50436-2), instruments for measuring the alcohol concentration in the ambient air in the vehicle, alcohol locks without a mouthpiece, mounting methods and attachments to the vehicle.

In fact, the EN 50436 standard consists of the following sections under the main title "Alcohol interlocks - Test methods and performance rules":

  • EN 50436-1 Part 1: Devices for drink-driving deterrent programs
  • EN 50436-2 Part 2: Breath alcohol measuring devices with mouthpiece for general protective use
  • EN 50436-3 Part 3: Authorities, decision makers, buyers and users guide for
  • EN 50436-4 Part 4: Connection and digital interface between alcohol interlocks and vehicle
  • EN 50436-6 Part 6: Data security
  • EN 50436-7 Part 7: Installation document

The purpose of alcohol locks is to prevent people whose alcohol concentration exceeds a certain limit value from driving a motor vehicle and to increase traffic safety.
