EN 352 Hearing Protectors - Safety Requirements

EN 352 Hearing Protectors - Safety Requirements

In the EN 352 standard, which is a European standard, the requirements for hearing protectors are explained and test methods are presented. This standard consists of the following sections under the main heading "Hearing protectors - Safety requirements":

EN 352 Hearing Protectors - Safety Requirements

  • EN 352-1 Part 1: Headphones
  • EN 352-2 Part 2: Earplugs
  • EN 352-3 Part 3: Earmuffs fitted to head protection and/or face protection devices
  • EN 352-4 Part 4: Level-dependent headphones
  • EN 352-5 Part 5: Active noise reduction earplugs
  • EN 352-6 Part 6: Headphones with safety-related audio input
  • EN 352-7 Part 7: Level dependent earplugs
  • EN 352-8 Part 8: Recreational audio headphones
  • EN 352-9 Part 9: Safety-related earplugs with sound input
  • EN 352-10 Part 10: Audio headphones for entertainment

The EN 352-1 standard describes requirements for construction, design, performance, marking and user information for headphones. In particular, this standard contains requirements for sound attenuation of headphones measured according to the ISO 4869-1 standard (ISO 4869-1 Acoustics - Hearing protectors - Part 1: Subjective method for measuring sound attenuation). The BS EN 352-1 standard does not apply to earphones outside the head sizes defined in this standard. This standard also does not apply to headphones fitted with head protection or face protection devices. Ergonomic aspects are addressed taking into account the interaction between the user, the device and, if possible, the working environment in which the device is likely to be used, within the requirements.

The EN 352-2 standard describes requirements for construction, design, performance, marking and user information for earplugs. In particular, this standard contains requirements for sound attenuation of earplugs measured according to the EN ISO 4869-1 standard. This standard applies to earplugs designed for users who can follow the given instructions and understand the risks involved, fit the earplugs correctly, and provide feedback on performance. Ergonomic aspects are addressed taking into account the interaction between the user, the device and, if possible, the working environment in which the device is likely to be used, within the requirements.

The EN 352-3 standard describes the requirements for construction, design, performance, marking and user information for earmuffs (mounted earplugs) fitted to head protection or face protection devices. In particular, this standard contains requirements for the sound insulation of earplugs, measured according to the EN ISO 4869-1 standard. This standard does not apply to headphones that fall outside the head sizes defined in this standard. This standard lays down a set of physical and acoustic requirements for earmuffs when fitted to the specified head protection or face protection device models or sizes, as a headset model designed to be attached to a head protection or face protection device can be fitted to a number of other models and sizes of the carrier. All requirements apply to earmuffs fitted to one of the specified models or sizes of head protection or face protection device. An abbreviated set of requirements applies to the same model of headset when fitted with a head protection or face protection device in other specified models or sizes. Ergonomic aspects are addressed taking into account the interaction between the user, the device and, if possible, the working environment in which the device is likely to be used, within the requirements.

The EN 352-4 standard applies to level-dependent headphones. This standard contains requirements for structure, design, performance, marking and user information regarding the inclusion of level-dependent functionality.

The EN 352-5 standard deals with earplugs whose passive acoustic performance can be enhanced by a noise canceling electronic circuit. This standard includes structural, design and performance requirements, test methods, marking requirements and user information. This standard does not cover earplugs that are attached to or part of a helmet. It is also not interested in outdoor electronic headphones that are not intended for attenuation. The requirements of this standard are intended to take into account the ergonomic interaction between the user, the device and, where possible, the working environment in which the device is likely to be used.

The EN 352-6 standard applies to headphones powered by a safety-related audio input. This standard contains requirements for construction, design, performance, marking and user information regarding the inclusion of safety-related audio input.

The EN 352-7 standard is applied to earplugs depending on the level. This standard contains requirements for structure, design, performance, marking and user information regarding the inclusion of level-dependent functionality.

The EN 352-8 standard applies to audio headsets intended for entertainment purposes. This standard includes requirements regarding construction, design, performance, labeling, and user information related to the inclusion of an entertainment audio system.

The EN 352-9 standard applies to earplugs equipped with a safety-related audio input. This standard includes requirements regarding construction, design, performance, marking, and user information related to the inclusion of a safety-related audio input.

The EN 352-10 standard applies to audio headsets intended for entertainment purposes. This standard includes requirements regarding construction, design, performance, labeling, and user information related to the inclusion of an entertainment audio system.
