Diamond Carat Analysis

Diamond Carat Analysis

Diamond carat analysis determines the clarity of a diamond. The best diamond clarity is flawless (FL ). A flawless, defect-free diamond has no internal or external flaws. An internally flawless (IF) grade means the diamond has no internal flaws, but may have external flaws. Diamond clarity grade is a standard value that expresses the concentration of natural characteristics found in a diamond.

Diamond Carat Analysis

Diamond experts use a grading system developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) that relies on four key factors to identify and classify diamonds: clarity, color, cut, and carat weight. These are known as the 4Cs (clarity, color, cut, and carat weight). When used together, these factors define the quality of a finished diamond. The value of a finished diamond is based on this combination.

The value of a diamond is often affected by the absence of one or more of its clarity, colour, cut and carat weight. These four factors define the individual characteristics of a diamond and the value of each diamond is based on these factors. Three of these (colour, clarity and carat weight) also formed the basis of the first diamond grading system established in India 2000 years ago.

Diamond weights are stated in metric carats. A metric carat is about two-tenths of a gram. The metric carat is divided into 100 points. Each point is one percent of a carat. Diamonds are weighed to one thousandth of a carat. Fractions of a carat mean hundreds of dollars in price differences depending on diamond quality. Over one carat, diamond weights are usually expressed in carats and decimals. Diamonds under one carat usually weigh in points.

Diamonds are not like any other commodity. Their price depends on a number of variables, and carat weight is just one of them. Larger diamonds are rarer than smaller diamonds. A larger stone is more expensive per carat. A 1-carat diamond has the same weight as four quarter-carat diamonds, but even if all other quality factors are equal, the large diamond is worth more than the combined weight of four smaller diamonds.
