DIN 1587 Hexagon Dome Cap Nuts

DIN 1587 Hexagon Dome Cap Nuts

Hexagonal domed cap nuts defined in the DIN 1587 standard published by the German Standardization Institute (DIN) are generally known as acorn cap nuts. These nuts have a flat round head that covers the hex nut base. The domed surface provides a finished look while protecting the bolt threads underneath, increasing safety in certain situations.

The requirements for hexagonal domed cap nuts are listed in the DIN 1587 standard under the following headings:

  • Mechanical properties of stainless steel for hex dome cap nuts
  • Chemical composition of stainless steel for hex dome cap nuts
  • Mechanical properties of steel for hex dome cap nuts
  • Chemical composition of steel for hex dome cap nuts

Stainless steels are divided into three groups as austenitic, ferritic and martensitic. Austenitic steel is by far the most common type (more than 90 percent of commercial fasteners). Steel groups and strength classes are indicated with four-digit letters and numbers as shown in the table in the standard. The DIN EN ISO 3506 standard contains the requirements for screws and nuts made of stainless steel.

Hexagon dome nuts are named after the dome-shaped protrusion on one side of the nut. This is mostly used to protect objects near the ends of screws from scratches and structural injuries. It also reduces the effects of physical mishaps on human skin if it hits the fasteners forcefully.

Cap nuts are traditional hex nuts with a flat dome attached on one side. They are used in assemblies where it is important to protect the bolt or thread after assembly for performance or safety. Cap nuts are also used for purely aesthetic reasons, such as automotive uses or residential construction, where the end of a bolt can cause an unpleasant distraction to the user.

The use of shaped nuts varies from species to species, but in general they all share some aspects of their design with the more common standard nuts, with an extra feature added to achieve certain functionality.

Among the numerous tests, measurements, analyses, and evaluations our organization provides for businesses in various sectors, we also offer testing services for hexagonal dome head nuts in accordance with the DIN 158 7 standard, thanks to our trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
