DIN 937 Thin Hexagonal Slotted Castle Nuts

DIN 937 Thin Hexagonal Slotted Castle Nuts

Metric thin hexagonal slotted castle nuts, defined in the DIN 937 standard published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), are hex nuts in which the slots are cut on one side of the nut (up to 12 mm diameter) or at the top (diameter greater than 12 mm). These slots are designed to provide a locking feature as defined in the DIN 94 standard, where a split pin, R clip or safety wire can be aligned along the slots and routed through a hole drilled in the shank of the mating bolt. These nuts are similar to the nuts defined in the DIN 935 standard but are thinner and ideal when space constraints are present. It is generally produced in diameters ranging from M5 to M30 and from marine grade stainless steel and zinc-plated steel.

The requirements in the DIN 937 standard are under the following headings:

  • Mechanical properties of stainless steel for castle nuts with thin hexagonal slots
  • Chemical composition of stainless steel for castle nuts with thin hexagonal slots
  • Mechanical properties of steel for castle nuts with thin hexagonal slots
  • Chemical composition of steel for castle nuts with thin hexagonal slots

Metric low-slot hexagonal nuts are six-sided internally threaded fasteners with slots at the top. The slots are used to lock the nut in place on an externally threaded fastener that has a hole drilled through the diameter of the threads. When the nut's slots align with the hole in the bolt, a separate fastener is inserted through the slots and the hole that holds the nut in place. The separate fastener is normally a dowel pin, but spring-loaded tension pins or a threaded screw with a nylon snap lock nut can also be used. Low-slot nuts are used when there is not enough space to use a normal slotted hexagonal nut. Metric slotted hexagonal nuts are hexagonal in shape with slots cut at the top along the entire length of the nut.

In short, hex castle nuts have a threaded head and allow a cotter pin to pass through the nut and into a hole in the bolt body. This prevents the nut from slipping off the installed bolt.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for thin hexagonal slotted castle nuts, within the scope of DIN 937 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
