Simply put, in woodless paper the wood pulp is bleached to remove yellow lignin. Lignin is wood extract. For this reason, yellow lignin (or wood) bleached paper is known as woodfree paper. This paper is available in glossy, silk, matte or uncoated. Coated woodless paper offers very high quality printing solutions for commercial use. It is a multi-coated paper with multiple coating layers applied to both sides of the paper to improve its printability and surface finishing properties. Lignin is essentially the glue that holds the cellulose fibers together in wood. Wood-free papers are made from wood, but do not contain wood. The wood is chemically treated to release lignin and produce pulp, which is almost pure cellulose. In short, woodless paper is mainly produced from chemical pulp with a small amount of mechanical pulp in it. It may also contain recycled fibers. Most of the lignin is removed and alienated from the cellulose fibers of the chemical pulp during processing.
When making a wood-containing paper, the majority of the raw material for pulp production is about 98 percent wood. Because a wood-containing paper contains a lot of lignin, a substance in wood's cell walls, it turns yellow faster than wood-free paper when exposed to sunlight. However, wood containing paper has many benefits such as stiffness, thickness, cost efficiency and low environmental impact.
