External threaded shaft locking washers, as defined in the DIN 5406 standard published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) , provide a simple and reliable way to fasten a smaller lock nut, such as metric shaft nuts conforming to the DIN 981 standard. The inner lug fits into the slot on the adapter sleeve or shaft. One of the outer lugs screws into the nut housing, securing the nut in place. The requirements for lock nuts are described in the DIN 981 standard.

The requirements for lock washers and locking plates for use with rolling bearings are included in the DIN 5406 standard under the following headings:
Steel or stainless steel is used in the production of such washers. Austenitic steel is a type of austenitic stainless steel. It contains a high percentage of nickel and chromium, providing great strength and resistance to corrosion as well as increasing its ability to be formed and easily welded to any shape.
The use of austenitic group stainless steel is as follows:
Stainless steels are divided into three groups as austenitic, ferritic and martensitic. Austenitic steel is by far the most common type (more than 90 percent of commercial fasteners). Steel groups and strength classes are indicated with four-digit letters and numbers as shown in the table in the standard.
Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for lock washers and locking plates for use with rolling bearings, within the scope of DIN 5406 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
