DIN 471 External Retaining Rings for Shafts, Normal Type and Heavy Type

DIN 471 External Retaining Rings for Shafts, Normal Type and Heavy Type

The DIN 471 standard, published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN), describes the requirements for external retaining rings for standard and heavy-duty shafts. The external retaining rings defined in this standard are thin, circular, metal rings used to prevent movement between mating components. They are designed to be mounted axially onto a shaft and fit into a groove on the outside of the shaft. They function to reduce vibration and maintain the correct position of two parts in an assembly, and allow for easy disassembly of components by removing the retaining ring.

DIN 471 External Retaining Rings for Shafts, Normal Type and Heavy Type

Requirements for outer retaining rings for shafts are included in the DIN 471 standard under the following headings:

  • Mechanical properties of stainless steel for outer retaining rings
  • Chemical composition of stainless steel for outer retaining rings
  • Mechanical properties of steel for outer retaining rings
  • Chemical composition of steel for outer retaining rings

Outer retaining rings (outer circlips) fit into grooves on the outside of shafts of all sizes. The fields of the ring protruding from the shaft hold it in place. A retaining ring is a fastener for one-time use only, generally when installed in a groove, that holds components or assemblies to a shaft or a housing. Once installed, the exposed part acts as a shoulder holding the particular component or assembly. Segments are a type of retaining ring. Circular thrust retaining rings are used in applications where there is no groove.

In general, outer retaining rings for shafts are manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel or beryllium copper, and various coatings are applied for aesthetics and corrosion protection depending on the type of environment in which they are used.

Stainless steels are divided into three groups as austenitic, ferritic and martensitic. Austenitic steel is by far the most common type (more than 90 percent of commercial fasteners). Steel groups and strength classes are indicated with four-digit letters and numbers as shown in the table in the standard.

Among the numerous test, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization also provides testing services for outer retaining rings for normal type and heavy type shafts, within the scope of DIN 471 standard, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment.
