The DIN 1475 standard published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) describes the requirements for pins with a one-third length center groove. These pins are a type of parallel pin designed for use in a wide variety of industries, typically used in fastening or insertion applications, for example as pulley shafts.
Similarly, the ISO 8742 standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) describes the characteristics of one-third-length central grooved pins made of steel or austenitic stainless steel, with three longitudinally pressed, equally spaced grooves on their outer surface (ISO 8742 Grooved pins - One-third-length center grooved). This standard covers pins with a nominal diameter of 1,5 to 25 mm (inclusive). Material shifted to either side of the grooves forming an enlarged diameter with a larger nominal diameter causes a non-positive locking fit when these splined pins are forced into a drilled hole equal to the nominal diameter.
The center of one-third length center-grooved pins is equipped with three equally spaced grooves cut at 120 degrees along one-third of the total length with chamfered edges at both ends. When mounting in a pre-drilled hole, compression on the central spline, whose diameter is slightly larger than the rest of the pin, causes a radial holding force that helps secure the pin in place.
These pins are manufactured from stainless steel and are available in a natural finish or a chemical matte black coating. Manufactured to standard specifications, one-third length center groove pins are generally offered to consumers in diameters ranging from 1,5 mm to 8 mm and lengths from 8 mm to 90 mm.
