Split-spring coil lock washers, as defined in the DIN 7980 standard published by the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) , are spiral-spring split lock washers consisting of a separate metal ring twisted into a spiral shape. Split lock washers are left-handed and allow the nut to be tightened only in the right direction. When the nut is tightened, the washer bites into the substrate and creates frictional resistance against rotation by applying a spring force between the bolt and the substrate. They are manufactured from high-quality stainless steel and marine-grade stainless steel.
Split spring lock washers are round split lock washers with a small outside diameter that can be used with hex socket screws and cheese head machine screws. Friction-resistant split spring lock washers are typically not considered suitable for fasteners of class 8.8 or higher. The use of spring washers is recommended for critical applications.

In general, rectangular spring washers are used to prevent vibration loosening. These washers have a larger outer diameter than square spring washers, making them very suitable for pan, button, and hexagonal head fasteners. When the fastener is tightened, the spring washers are compressed. As a result, when retraction begins to occur, they exert pressure on the fastener and substrate by maintaining friction within the assembly, which slows down the loosening rate.
