Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 103 Tests

UN ECE R103 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of the spare catalytic converter equipment of the vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation.

UN / ECE R 103 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 103 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions for the approval of backup catalytic converters for power-operated vehicles and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to type approval as separate technical units of catalytic converters to be fitted as spare parts to one or more types of motor vehicles of category M1 and N1.

Original equipment catalytic converter means a catalytic converter or a group of catalytic converters that are covered by the type-approval delivered for the vehicle and whose types are specified in the documents relating to Annex 83 to Regulation No. 2.

Spare catalytic converter means a catalytic converter or a group of catalytic converters that can be approved in accordance with this regulation, other than those defined in the above paragraph. The replacement catalytic converter must be designed, manufactured and installed in such a way as to ensure that the vehicle complies with the provisions of the Regulations to which it was originally compliant and that emissions of pollutants are effectively limited during the normal life of the vehicle.

Vehicles equipped with a replacement converter of the type for which approval is requested are subject to a type I test under the conditions specified in the relevant annexes of Regulation No. 83. In addition to measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment under the Regulation, a number of mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out. In order for the tests to be considered successful, the test results must meet the requirements set out in the Regulation.
