UN / ECE R 23 Tests

Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 23 Tests

UN ECE R23 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the regulation on the evaluation of reversing lamps for vehicles of categories M, N, O and T.

UN / ECE R 23 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation (UN/ECE) No. 23 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe — Covers the uniform provisions for the approval of reversing lamps for powered vehicles and their trailers and the tests applied accordingly.

According to UN ECE R23 regulation 'Reversing light' means a vehicle lamp designed to illuminate the road behind the vehicle and to warn other road users that the vehicle is reversing or about to go backwards.

All measurements will be made photometrically and colorimetrically:

  • In the case of a lamp with a replaceable light source, if an electronic light source is not provided by the control device, it is provided with a standard colorless filament lamp of the category prescribed for the device, supplied with the voltage necessary to produce the reference luminous flux required for it.
  • In the case of a lamp equipped with non-replaceable light sources (filament lamps and others), it is tested at 6,75 V, 13,5 V or 28,0 V, respectively.
  • In the case of a system using an electronic light source control device, the voltage declared by the manufacturer to the input terminals of the lamp, which is part of the lamp, or 6,75 V, 13, 5 V or 28,0 V, respectively, if not specified, is set.
  • If the lamp is not part of a system using an electronic light source control device, the manufacturer's declared voltage must be applied to the lamp's input terminals.

For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
