UN ECE R59 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in categories M1 and N1 in terms of silencing system equipment.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 59 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of the backup silencer systems of vehicles and the tests applied accordingly.
"Silencing systems" means a complete set of components necessary to limit the noise produced by the engine and exhaust of a motor vehicle. "Silencing system component" means one of the individual components that together make up the muting system (eg, suitable silencer, expansion chamber, resonator).
The backup exhaust system or components must be designed, manufactured and installed in such a way as to ensure that the vehicle complies with the provisions of this Regulation under normal conditions of use, regardless of any vibrations to which it may be subjected.
Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
