Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 28 Tests

UN ECE R28 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of audio warning devices supplied with direct or alternating current or compressed air, and the audible signals of motor vehicles, intended for installation on motor vehicles of categories L3 to 5, M and N.

UN / ECE R 28 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 28 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of acoustic warning devices and motor vehicles according to their acoustic signals and the tests applied accordingly.

Audible warning devices (AWD) mentioned in the regulation are mainly designed for:

  • Engine cycles of less than or equal to 7 kW
  • Vehicles of categories M and N and motorcycles with a power greater than 7 kW

Test voltage and sound pressure measurements will be made under the conditions specified in the regulation. The weighted sound pressure level emitted by the device installed in the vehicle should be measured at a distance of 7 m from the front of the vehicle, the vehicle should be placed in an open area, on the ground as flat as possible.

The sound pressure level of background noise and wind noise must be at least 10 dB(A) below the sound to be measured. The maximum sound-pressure level will be sought at 0,5 and 1,5 m above the ground. The microphone of the measuring device should be placed approximately in the mean longitudinal plane of the vehicle.

The maximum sound pressure level of the tested acoustic signal must be equal to 7 dB(A) and more than 83 dB(A) for signals of engine cycles with a power less than or equal to 112 kW, signals from vehicles of categories M and N and power must be equal to 7 dB(A) and not more than 93 dB(A) for motor cycles greater than 112 kW.

For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
