Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 58 Tests

UN ECE R58 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation in terms of Rear Underrun Protection Devices (RUPDs).

UN / ECE R 58 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 58 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of RUPDs intended for installation on vehicles in categories N 2 , N 3 , O 3 and O 4 and the tests applied accordingly.

The cross-section height of the traverse should not be less than 100 mm. The side ends of the traverse should not be bent back or have a sharp outer edge; this condition is fulfilled when the lateral ends of the crossmember are externally rounded and have a radius of curvature of not less than 2,5 mm.

RUPD (Rear Under Protection Devices) can be designed to have several positions at the rear of the vehicle. In this case, there must be a guaranteed method of securing it in service position to prevent any unintentional change of location.

The force applied by the operator to change the position of the device should not exceed 40 daN. Even when the vehicle is empty, the ground clearance relative to the underside of the RUP must not exceed 550 mm across its entire width. The RUP should be placed as close to the rear of the vehicle as possible.

The requirements of the regulation must be verified by means of suitable test mandrels. For the tests specified, the forces shall be applied separately and sequentially over a surface greater than 250 mm in height (the exact height must be specified by the manufacturer) and 200 mm in width. The height of the center of the surface from the ground must be defined by the manufacturer within the lines that horizontally delimit the device.

When the test is carried out on a vehicle, the height should not exceed 600 mm when the vehicle is empty. The order in which the forces are applied can be determined by the manufacturer. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
