UN / ECE R5 Tests

Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R5 Tests

UN ECE R5 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in T2 categories in terms of closed beam headlights.

UN / ECE R5 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 5 (UN/ECE) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe — covers the uniform provisions and associated tests for the approval of vehicles (SB) atomic headlights emitting a European type asymmetrical high beam or low beam or both.

A so-called "sealed beam" means a headlight unit whose components are all parts of a whole, consisting of a reflector system, a lens system, and one or more electrical light sources, sealed at the time of manufacture and cannot be disassembled without rendering the unit completely unusable.

Approval is given if all headlight type samples submitted for testing meet the provisions of this regulation. SB units must be constructed to maintain their prescribed photometric properties and remain in good working order in normal use, despite the vibrations to which they may be subjected.

Headlights shall have a device that allows them to be adjusted on the vehicle to comply with the rules applicable to them. If such a device is limited to vehicles where the headlight adjustment can be adjusted in other ways, such a device need not be fitted to the SB headlight inserts.

When an SB headlight with high beam and an SB headlight with low beam are installed as interchangeable subunits to form a composite unit, the adjusting device must ensure that each SB unit is duly adjusted individually.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
