UN / ECE R 122 Tests

Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 122 Tests

UN ECE R122 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in categories M, N and O in terms of heating systems equipment.

UN / ECE R 122 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 122 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform technical guidelines for the approval of M, N and O category vehicles in relation to heating systems and the tests applied accordingly.

This regulation applies to vehicles of category M, N or O fitted with a heating system. Vehicle type according to the heating system means vehicles that do not differ in fundamental aspects such as the operating principle/principles of the heating system.

The passenger compartment of each vehicle will be equipped with a heating system. If a vehicle has a heating system for the cargo area, it will comply with this regulation. The heating system of the vehicle to be type-approved must meet the technical requirements in the relevant part of this directive.

Body parts and other components around the heater must be protected from excessive heat and possible contamination of fuel or oil. The combustion heater must not pose a risk of fire, even in the event of overheating.

This requirement is considered to be met if the installation provides adequate distance and adequate ventilation to all parts by using fire resistant materials or by using heat shields. In M2 and M3 vehicles, the combustion heater must not be placed in the passenger compartment. Every reasonable precaution should be taken in the placement of the heater to minimize the risk of injury and damage to personal property.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
