Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 24 Tests

UN ECE R24 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of pressure-ignition engines for the approval of the emission of visible pollutants.

UN / ECE R 24 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 24 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions on the acceptance of approval and mutual approval conditions for motor vehicle equipment and parts, and the tests applied accordingly.

This regulation covers the following sections;

  • Approval of vehicles with Pressure Ignition engines for the emission of visible pollutants by the engine
  • Pressure Measurement of ignition engine power
  • On the acceptance of the terms of approval and mutual approval for motor vehicle equipment and parts

A compression-ignition (CI) engine means an engine that operates on the compression-ignition principle (eg a diesel engine). Components that may affect the emission of visible pollutants must be designed, manufactured and installed in such a way as to ensure that the engine complies with the provisions of this Regulation in normal use, despite the vibration to which it may be subjected.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
