UN / ECE R 134 Tests

Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 134 Tests

UN ECE R134 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the safety evaluation of hydrogen fueled vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation.

UN / ECE R 134 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 134 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions for the approval of motor vehicles and their components, and the tests applied accordingly, with regard to the safety-related performance of hydrogen fueled vehicles (HFCV).

This Regulation applies to:

  • Compressed hydrogen storage systems for their safety-related performance for hydrogen fueled vehicles.
  • Special components for their safety-related performance for compressed hydrogen storage systems for hydrogen fueled vehicles.
  • Hydrogen fueled vehicles of categories M and N incorporating a compressed hydrogen storage system in its safety-related performance.

Compressed hydrogen storage system (CHSS) means a system designed to store hydrogen fuel for a hydrogen fueled vehicle and consists of a pressure vessel, pressure relief devices (PRDs), and shut-off device(s) that isolate the stored hydrogen from the hydrogen. The hydrogen storage system consists of the high-pressure storage container and the primary shut-off devices for openings to the high-pressure storage container.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
