Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 35 Tests

UN ECE R35 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of the foot control mechanisms (brake, gas, clutch pedal) of the vehicles.

UN / ECE R 35 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 35 (UN/ECE) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe — It covers uniform provisions regarding the approval of pedal positions and safety of motor vehicles and the tests applied accordingly.

Foot pedals assist drivers in this part of the process by making the clutch, brake and accelerator pedal essential elements of safe driving. All vehicles have foot pedals, but the number depends on the type of vehicle. Manual transmission cars and trucks have three pedals: clutch on the left, brake in the middle, and accelerator on the right.

Vehicles with automatic transmission have only brake and accelerator pedals, as the engine changes gears at appropriate times without the need for driver intervention. Drivers press the gas when they want to go, and the brake when they want to stop. How hard they press these pedals determines the speed of the vehicle, or how fast it comes to a stop.

Foot controls should be in sequential order from left to right, in the form of clutch, brake and accelerator pedal, if any. The location of the foot control equipment and the gap between them should comply with the values given by the regulation.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
