UN / ECE R 80 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 80 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) - It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of large passenger vehicles and their seats in terms of the strength of their seats and connections, and the tests applied accordingly.

According to the Regulation, 'Approval of a seat' means approval of a seat type as a component of the protection of forward-facing occupants in terms of their durability and the design of the backrests, and accordingly, the approval of the vehicle also relates to the strength of the parts of the vehicle structure to which the seats are to be fixed and the assembly of the seats. means approval of a vehicle type.

Test Procedure

  • The seat to be tested must be mounted on a test platform that represents the body of a vehicle, or on a solid test platform.
  • The connection on the test platform provided for the test seat(s) must be identified or have the same characteristics as those used in the vehicle(s) the seat is intended to be used in.
  • The seat to be tested will be complete with all upholstery and accessories. If the sofa has a table, it must be in the reclined position.
  •  If it can be adjusted laterally, the seat should be positioned for maximum extension.
  • If adjustable, the seatback, the resulting inclination of the dummy's torso used to determine the H-point, and the actual torso angle for motor vehicle seating positions should be adjusted as close as possible to that recommended by the manufacturer.
  • If the backrest is equipped with a height-adjustable head restraint, it must be in its lowest position.

Equipment evaluated within the scope of the relevant regulation, mannequin tests, impact absorption test, etc. Dynamic tests are applied and various measurements are made. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
