Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 74 Tests

UN ECE R74 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of L1 category vehicles in terms of light signals and lighting equipment.

UN / ECE R 74 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation (UN/ECE) No. 74 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of L1 category vehicles and the tests applied accordingly, regarding the installation of lighting and light signal devices.

This Regulation applies to vehicles of category L 1 with regard to the installation of lighting and light-signaling devices. Approval of a vehicle means approval of a type of vehicle in relation to the number and installation of lighting and light-signaling devices.

Lighting and light signal devices must be installed in such a way as to maintain the features specified in this Regulation and ensure that the vehicle complies with the requirements of this Regulation, despite normal use and vibrations to which they may be exposed. In particular, it will not be possible to accidentally adjust the lamps. Illumination lamps should be placed in such a way that their correct direction can be easily adjusted.

For all light-signaling devices, including side-mounted, the reference axis of the lamp when fitted to the vehicle must be parallel to the vehicle's road bearing plane; it must also be perpendicular to the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle for side reflectors and parallel to this plane for all other devices. A tolerance of ± 3° in all directions will be allowed. In addition, if assembly specifications have been given by the manufacturer, they will be complied with.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
