Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 66 Tests

UN ECE R66 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the conformity assessment of single-deck fixed or articulated vehicles belonging to M2 or M3 categories, Class II or III, or Class B with more than 16 passengers.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 66 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of the superstructure of large passenger vehicles regarding the strength of their superstructures and the tests applied accordingly.

For the purposes of this regulation, ‘Vehicle’ means a bus or coach designed and equipped for the carriage of passengers. A vehicle is an individual representative of a vehicle type. ‘Vehicle type’ means a category of vehicles manufactured with the same design technical features, main dimensions and structural arrangement. The vehicle type must be defined by the vehicle manufacturer.

The superstructure of the vehicle must have sufficient strength to ensure that the remaining clearance on the complete vehicle is not damaged during and after the rollover test.

No part of the vehicle that is no longer outside the area at the start of the test (eg pillars, safety rings, luggage racks) must not enter the area remaining during the test. Any structural parts that were originally in the residual space (e.g. vertical handles, partitions, kitchenettes, toilets) will now be ignored when assessing intrusion into the space.

No part of the remaining space should protrude beyond the contour of the deformed structure. The contour of the deformed structure will be determined sequentially between each adjacent window and/or door pillar. Between the two deformed posts, the contour shall be a theoretical surface defined by straight lines connecting the inner contour points of the posts that were at the same height above ground level prior to the tipping test.

The vehicle will be subjected to many dynamic tests, especially the rollover test. A rollover test is a very fast, dynamic process with distinguishable steps, a rollover test should be considered when planning its instrumentation and measurement.

For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
