Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 25 Tests

UN ECE R25 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of headrests of vehicles.

UN / ECE R 25 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 25 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of head restraint(s) and the tests applied accordingly, whether they are included in vehicle seats or not.

According to UN ECE R25 regulation;

  • 'Head restraint' means a device whose purpose is to limit the backward displacement of an adult occupant's head relative to their torso in order to reduce the risk of injury to the occupant's cervical vertebrae in the event of an accident.
  • 'Integrated headrest' means a headrest consisting of the upper part of the backrest.
  • 'Removable headrest' means a headrest consisting of a component that is detachable from the seat, designed for insertion and positive retention in the backrest structure.
  • 'Separate headrest' means a headrest consisting of a separate component of the seat, designed to accommodate and/or positively hold onto the vehicle structure;

The presence of the head restraint must not cause additional danger to the occupants of the vehicle. In particular, it shall not exhibit any dangerous roughness or sharp edges that, in any operating position, could increase the risk or severity of occupant injury.

For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
