Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 40 Tests

UN ECE R40 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of the engines of two- or three-wheeled motorcycles in terms of gas emissions.

UN / ECE R 40 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 40 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the gaseous pollutant emission of vehicles equipped with positive ignition engines and the tests applied accordingly.

For the purposes of the Regulation, "Approval of a vehicle" means approval of a vehicle type with regard to the limitation of emission of gaseous pollutants from the engine. Components that may affect the emission of gaseous pollutants must be designed, manufactured and installed in such a way as to ensure that the vehicle complies with the provisions of this Regulation in normal use, despite the vibration to which it may be subjected.

This Regulation applies to the emission of gaseous pollutants from positive ignition engines of two-wheeled or three-wheeled motorcycles with a curb weight of less than 400 kg, a maximum design speed of 50 km/h and/or a cylinder capacity exceeding 50 ccm.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
