Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 111 Tests

UN ECE R111 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation to evaluate the rollover stability of tank vehicles in categories N2, N3, O3 and O4.

UN / ECE R 111 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 111 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of N and O category tank vehicles on roll stability and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to the roll stability of tank vehicles of categories N2, N3, O3 and O4 for the transport of dangerous goods.

The vehicle will undergo the following tests:

  • A tilt-table test in accordance with Annex 3 to this Regulation, simulating a vibration-free steady-state rotation, or
  • Alternatively, a calculation method according to Annex 4 of this Regulation. If there is any doubt or disagreement, the tilt table test will be used.
  • If certain conditions are met, the result of the tilt table test or calculation method should be considered satisfactory.

The criteria using the relevant annex (3 or 4) of this Regulation must meet one of the following conditions, subject to paragraph 5.1.2:

  • The static roll stability of the vehicle must be such that for all tests in both slope directions the point at which rollover occurs is not exceeded when a slope table angle of 23° is reached.
  • If the vehicle fails one of three tests for a given direction (right or left), it is allowed to perform one sequential (re)test.
  • The roll stability of the vehicle must be such that it does not exceed the point where the rollover occurs when a lateral acceleration of 4 m/s2 is reached.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
