UN ECE R78 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in categories L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 and L 5 in terms of brake equipment.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 78 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) — covers the uniform provisions regarding the braking approval of vehicles in categories L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 and L 5 and the tests applied accordingly.
This Regulation applies to vehicles in categories L 1 , L 2 , L 3 , L 4 and L 5 (1) and the following categories do not include:
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) refers to a system that detects wheel slip and limits the degree of wheel slip by automatically modulating the pressure that generates braking forces in the wheel(s). Approval of a vehicle means approval of a vehicle type with regard to braking.
Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
