Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 91 Tests

UN ECE R91 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in categories M, N, O and T with regard to side marker lamps.

UN / ECE R 91 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 91 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of side marker lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers and the tests applied accordingly.

'Side marker lamp' as defined in the regulation means a lamp used to indicate the presence of the vehicle when viewed from the side. Each side marker lamp submitted for approval must comply with the specifications specified in the regulation. Side marker lamps are to be designed and constructed in such a way that, in normal use, they will continue to operate satisfactorily and maintain the specifications set forth in this regulation, despite the vibrations to which they may be subjected.

The measurements made in the tests should be made with a colorless standard filament lamp of the type recommended for the side marker lamp and should be arranged to produce the reference luminous flux prescribed for this type of lamp, taking into account the provisions of the regulation. All measurements in lamps equipped with non-replaceable light sources (filament lamps and others) shall be made at 6,75 V, 13,5 V or 28,0 V, respectively.

In the case of light sources supplied by a dedicated power supply, the above test voltages should be applied to the input terminals of that power supply. The test lab may request from the manufacturer the specific power supply needed to power the light sources. The boundaries of the visible surface in the direction of the reference axis of a light signal device must be determined.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
