Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 120 Tests

UN ECE R120 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation in terms of power, torque and specific fuel consumption.

UN / ECE R 120 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) Regulation No. 120 — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of net power, net torque and specific fuel consumption of internal combustion engines to be installed on agricultural and forestry tractors and non-road mobile machinery and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to the representation of curves specified by the manufacturer for power, torque and specific fuel consumption at full load as a function of engine speed for internal combustion engines to be used. The net power test will consist of:

  • Full throttle operation for mechanically controlled positive ignition engines and constant full load fuel injection pump adjustment for mechanically controlled compression ignition engines; or
  • A study of the fuel system settings necessary to produce the power specified by the manufacturer for electronically controlled engines.

Measurements should be made at a sufficient number of engine speeds to accurately describe the power, torque and specific fuel consumption curves between the lowest and highest engine speeds recommended by the manufacturer. This speed range should include the rotational speeds at which the motor produces its rated net power, its maximum power, and its maximum torque.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
