UN ECE R3 tests cover a series of tests for retroreflective devices and reflectors for vehicles in categories L, M, N, O and T, in accordance with the relevant regulation.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval in this respect, but only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 3 (UN/ECE) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions for the approval of retroreflective devices for powered vehicles and their trailers and the tests applied accordingly.
Retroreflective devices must be constructed to operate satisfactorily and continue to operate under normal use. In addition, they should not have design or manufacturing defects that would impair their efficient operation or maintenance in good condition.
The components of retroreflective devices must not be easily removable. Retroreflective optical units are not interchangeable.
The outer surface of retroreflective devices should be easy to clean. Therefore, it should not be a rough surface; Any protrusions it may show should not hinder easy cleaning.
For Class IVA devices, their fixing means shall be such as to allow a stable and durable connection between the device and the vehicle. In normal use there will be no access to the inner surface of the retroreflectors.
Within the scope of UN ECE R3 tests, the following tests are carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation;
For the test to be considered successful, the test results must meet the requirements of the regulation. If the test results do not meet the requirements, the tests should be repeated on another randomly selected sample.
