Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 115 Tests

UN ECE R115 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of vehicles in the categories specified in the regulation in terms of LPG and CNG retrofit equipment.

UN / ECE R 115 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 115 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) includes uniform provisions for the approval of the following, and tests applied accordingly:

  • Special LPG (liquefied petroleum gases) retrofit systems to be installed on motor vehicles for the use of LPG in propulsion systems;
  • Special CNG (compressed natural gas) retrofit systems to be installed on motor vehicles for the use of CNG in propulsion systems

This Regulation applies to retrofit systems intended to be installed on vehicles of category M and N, with the exception of:

  • Type-approved vehicles in accordance with Regulation No. 83, series of amendments 00 or 01 or series 02 or 03 or 04,
  • Type-approved vehicles in accordance with Regulation No. 49, modification series 00 or 01 or series 02 or 03,
  • Type-approved vehicles in accordance with Council Directive 70/220/EEC (2), including the amending Directive 96/69/EC of the European Parliament, and the Council (3),
  • Type-approved vehicles up to the amending Directive 88/77/EC (4) of the European Parliament and of the Council in accordance with Council Directive 96/1/EEC (5).

After the retrofit system has been fitted to the vehicle, the modified vehicle will fulfill all the provisions of the regulation for which the type approval was first granted.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
