Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R4 Tests

UN ECE R4 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the regulation on rear license plate lamps of vehicles in categories M, N, O and T.

UN / ECE R4 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval in this respect, but only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 4 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of devices for lighting the rear registration plates of motor vehicles and their trailers, and the tests applied accordingly.

According to UN ECE R4 regulation, "Rear license plate light" means a device for illuminating the back plate by reflection. For the approval of this device, the light provided by the device is expected to illuminate the area to be covered by the plate without any problems.

Devices for illuminating rear registration plates must be made in such a way that the entire surface of the plate is visible within the angles specified in the relevant section of the regulation.

All measurements must be made with a standard filament lamp of the category specified by the manufacturer, the supply voltage must be adjusted to produce the reference luminous flux. For devices with non-replaceable light sources, all measurements shall be made at 6,75 V, 13,5 V or 28,0 V, respectively.

In the case of light sources supplied by a dedicated power supply, the above test voltages should be applied to the input terminals of that power supply. The test lab may request from the manufacturer the specific power supply needed to power the light sources.

For any rear registration plate lighting device, except those equipped with filament lamp(s), the luminance values measured after one minute and 30 minutes of operation must comply with the minimum requirements.

The luminance distribution after one minute of operation can be calculated by applying to each test point the ratio of the luminance values measured at one point and after 30 min of operation.

The light of the lamp used in the illuminator should be sufficiently colorless so as not to cause any appreciable change in the color of the registration plate.

The conformity tests in this regulation cover photometric properties. The tests are generally carried out according to the methods specified in this regulation.

In any conformity test performed by the manufacturer, equivalent methods may be used with the approval of the competent authority responsible for the approval tests. The manufacturer is responsible for proving that the methods applied are equivalent to those specified in this Regulation.

The sampled device is subjected to photometric measurements stipulated in the regulation. For the test to be considered successful, the test results must meet the requirements of the regulation.
