Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 92 Tests

UN ECE R92 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of spare exhaust equipment of vehicles in categories L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5 in terms of sound emission.

UN / ECE R 92 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 92 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) — uniform provisions regarding the approval of non-original spare exhaust muffling systems (NORESS) with respect to noise emissions for vehicles of categories L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5, and the corresponding applicable includes tests.

This Regulation applies to non-original replacement exhaust silencer systems for vehicles of categories L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5. 'Non-genuine replacement exhaust silencer system or components of this system' means a different type of system from that fitted to the vehicle upon approval or extension of approval. It can only be used as a backup exhaust or muffling system. The abbreviation NORESS stands for non-genuine replacement exhaust silencer.

The muffler shall be designed, constructed and installed to provide:

  • (a) The vehicle complies with the requirements of this Regulation under normal conditions of use and in particular regardless of any vibrations to which it may be exposed;
  • (b) Shows reasonable resistance to corrosion to which the vehicle is subjected, given the normal conditions of use;
  • (c) The ground clearance provided by the originally fitted muffler and the possible inclined position of the vehicle are not reduced;
  • (d) No unduly high temperatures at the surface;
  • (e) The edges are not sharp or jagged and there is sufficient clearance for shock absorbers and springs;
  • (f) Sufficient clearance is provided for the spring parts;
  • (g) Adequate safety distance is provided for the pipes;
  • (h) tamper-proof in compliance with clearly defined maintenance and installation requirements;

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
