Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 18 Tests

UN ECE R18 regulation applies to motor vehicles with at least three wheels, excluding those of category M 1 and N 1, for their protection against unauthorized use.

UN / ECE R 18 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 18 (UN/ECE) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of motor vehicles against unauthorized use and the tests applied accordingly.

According to the regulation, 'Approval of a vehicle' means approval of a vehicle type with regard to its protection against unauthorized use.

'Protective device' means a system designed to prevent the unauthorized normal activation of the engine or other sources of vehicle main engine power, with at least one system designed in conjunction with:

  • locks the steering wheel; or
  • locks the gearbox; or
  • locks gear control; or
  • locks the brakes.

For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
