UN / ECE R 36 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 36 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of the general structures of large passenger transport vehicles and the tests applied accordingly.

Vehicle referred to in the regulation means a single-deck vehicle designed and equipped for the transport of more than 22 passengers. There are three classes of vehicles. A vehicle can be considered to belong to more than one class. In such a case, it can be approved for each corresponding class.

  • "Class I" - Vehicles built with areas for standing passengers to allow for frequent passenger movement.
  • "Class II" - Vehicles made primarily for the carriage of seated passengers and designed to permit the carriage of standing passengers in a passageway and/or in a standing area not exceeding the space provided for two double seats.
  • "Class III" - vehicles made for the transport of seated passengers only.

This regulation applies to single-deck vehicles with a total width exceeding 2.30 meters and a capacity greater than 22 passengers in addition to the driver. These vehicles are subjected to tests within the scope of fire safety, electronic equipment safety, durability of emergency equipment, safety of safety equipment and many other.

After the tests, the equipment subject to the test is expected to comply with the values and parameters determined in the regulation. Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
