UN / ECE R 31 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 31 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Uniform provisions for the approval of closed-beam headlamps (SB) of a power-driven vehicle emitting a European asymmetrical low beam or high beam, or both, and the associated tests covers.

According to the Regulation, 'Halogen sealed beam headlamp unit' ('HSB unit') means a headlamp whose components form an integrated whole, including a reflector of glass, metal or other material, an optical system and one or more halogen light sources. 'Lens' means the outermost component of the headlamp (unit) which transmits light from the illuminating surface.

Based on test values Nominal voltage is 12 volts and Watts should not exceed 13,2 watts on the drive beam filament and 75 watts on the passing beam filament measured at a test voltage of 68 volts. The conformity tests in this regulation cover the verification of the photometric properties and the change in the vertical position of the cutting line under the influence of heat.

For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
