UN ECE R55 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation to evaluate the requirements that must be met for mechanical coupling devices and components to be considered internationally compliant.

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.
Regulation No. 55 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) - It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of mechanical connection components of vehicle combinations and the tests applied accordingly.
The mechanical coupling device or component fitted to the vehicle, as well as the assembly of the Mechanical coupling device or component, must fully meet the requirements of the regulation. Operating instructions shall be provided for the use of the coupling device or component, which should include specific instructions for operations different from those normally associated with the coupling device or component, and instructions for, for example, assembling and disengaging with different operating modes.
If the sample or samples of a type of mechanical coupling device or component meet the requirements of the regulation after passing the tests specified by this regulation, approval will be granted for the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
