Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 105 Tests

UN ECE R105 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of N category motor vehicles and their O type trailers regarding the transport of dangerous goods.

UN / ECE R 105 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation No. 105 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — It covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of vehicles for the transport of dangerous goods in terms of certain structural features and the tests applied accordingly.

The vehicle referred to within the scope of the regulation means a chassis-cab vehicle, a tractor for a semi-trailer, a trailer-chassis or a trailer with a self-supporting body designed for the transport of dangerous goods.

Some provisions in the relevant regulation are as follows;

  • The electrical installation in the vehicles as a whole must fully comply with the provisions of the regulation.
  • A switch should be placed as close to the battery as possible to break electrical circuits. If a single-pole switch is used, it should be placed on the supply wire and not on the ground wire. The switch must have an enclosure with protection class IP529 according to IEC Standard 65.
  • Battery terminals must be electrically insulated or covered with an insulating battery box cover. If batteries are not located under the hood, they should be placed in a ventilated box.
  • All installations shall be designed, constructed and protected in such a way that they will not cause any ignition or short circuit under normal vehicle use conditions and that these risks can be minimized in the event of an impact or deformation.
  • Cables located behind the driver's cab must be protected from impact, wear and friction during normal vehicle operation.
  • Lamp bulbs with screw caps should not be used.

Fuel tanks feeding the vehicle's engine must meet the following requirements:

  • In the event of a leak, the fuel will flow to the ground without touching the hot parts of the vehicle or load.
  • Fuel tanks containing gasoline shall be equipped with an effective flame arrester at the filler neck or a cover in which the opening can be hermetically sealed.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
