Homologation and UN ECE Automotive Type Approval Tests

UN / ECE R 64 Tests

UN ECE R64 tests cover a series of tests carried out in accordance with the relevant regulation for the evaluation of M1 and N1 category vehicles in terms of spare tire and pneumatic tires.

UN / ECE R 64 Tests

ECE regulations define cross-border technical regulations for establishing approval or uniform approval procedures for motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts. Automated commercial vehicles are already fully eligible for approval only through appropriate individual measures in the country in which they will be used. What is missing is a set of rules at the international ECE level.

Regulation 64 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) — Covers the uniform provisions regarding the approval of vehicles with temporary spare tire and pneumatic tire equipment and the tests applied accordingly.

This Regulation applies to the approval of vehicles of category M1 and N1 equipped with:

  • Spare unit for temporary use; and/or
  • Run-flat pneumatic tires and/or run-flat system.

For the purposes of this Regulation, spare wheel and tire changing units, run-flat tires or a completely deflated run-flat system shall be considered temporary-use spares as defined in the regulation.

Within the scope of the regulation, many mechanical, dynamic and environmental tests are carried out as well as measurements for the approval of the relevant equipment. For tests to be considered successful, test results must meet regulatory requirements.
